Today I felt like doing another Manga Ramblings post. The topic will be going over series that have no real easy way to read (legally and to my knowledge) short of going to “The Dark Side”. It also definitely has nothing to do with digging really.
Most readers of manga realize that short of understanding Japanese and paying international shipping to bring yourself manga from Japan our options in the states are slim.
Of course this is changing rapidly with more and more series being serialized stateside and quite a few of them are even obscure titles that are not necessarily popular. Thus making me quickly fill my two bookcases with manga series I can actually hold in my hand.
But sadly even with that being the case there is just almost no way for the states to get every single manga that comes out from Japan. As such this often turns us to what is affectionately called “The Dark Side” where fan-translated versions of these manga show up for convenient reading.
Now as I said these are, to my knowledge, only available in the states by reading fan translated versions. They are also personal favorites.
Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai – Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are the members of the incredibly prestigious Shuchi’in Academy’s student council, asserting their positions as geniuses among geniuses. All the time they spend together has caused the two of them to develop feelings for each other, but their pride will not allow them to be the one to confess and become the submissive one in the relationship! Love is war, and their battle to make the other confess begins now!
One of my current favorite manga that I am reading right now.
The interactions of the main characters are amazing and I love how they both have the same mindset of not wanting to be the one who confesses to the other.
Currently out with only ten chapters I would have to say there isn’t much of an… overarching story or anything as much as it is situational/episodic/chapter based blocks of comedy based on Shinomiya and Shirogane clashing against each other trying to get the other to confess to them.
On top of great characters and the fun chapter based comedy it has some pretty decent artwork that really makes the characters look great.
I would highly recommend anyone to read this one.
Takane to Hana
When Hana replaces her sister at an omiai (like a goukon, but for marriage) little does she expect to be insulted and called plain and flat-chested by the handsome and older Takane! Furious, she turns the tables on him by accepting the match instead of rejecting him. How will these two ever find love?
This one is actually kind of a weird one for me personally.
On one hand I have some personal issues against the whole super handsome, extremely rich, guy in his twenties and super average high school girl falling for each other. If it was her just out of high school I probably wouldn’t give a damn but it is just something about her still being in high school I guess.
On the other hand though…
The comedy is rich, the art is amazing and funny when it goes into chibi mode, the interactions between the two main characters, and even the side characters, is great and honestly, other than the falling for each other part, is something I can see between characters with the age and societal gap between them.
Overall the series is still pretty good and I would still recommend it despite my slight hesitation over the story premise.
After his unfortunate death, Tomokui Kanata has been reincarnated as a member of the weakest race, a goblin named Rou. However, Rou has retained his previous life’s memories, as well as an ability that allows him to gain strength and abilities from eating. He also possesses a unique evolutionary tree. Now, Rou has made a promise to himself that he would live this life to the fullest. In this alternate world of survival of the fittest, events unfold with competent subordinates and comrades.
This one I actually only found fairly recently.
But I love fantasy stories and this one is a sort of interesting one with a twist.
From some looking around it is your typical manga based off a LN so it probably skimps on some details.
Anyway the main character is killed in his previous life but is reincarnated as a goblin, the weakest race, named Rou.
He however has a special ability that whatever he eats he learns certain skills. The story takes a sort of RPG element through this as well that after enough kills/skills learned the goblins in Rou’s tribe can evolve with Rou himself going from a Goblin to a Hobgoblin to eventually being a powerful Ogre.
It is a pretty fun read though. The biggest fault for it is… it really has no story? The way it reads is more like a daily journal type of thing.
It also doesn’t really mention if these guys are meant to be the bad guys or good guys either really, not that it really matters, but that can easily be pushed aside as they are just surviving.
I’d say if you like fantasy stories with a sense of MMO/RPG in it this might be a fun read for you. But if you dislike either of those or series without much of a story… might want to stay away until one comes obvious in the series.
